センター長挨拶
東海国立大学機構は、「大学院生が QTA、GSI として教育に参画するための体制の構築、育成研修の実施」を目指して、QTA・GSIトレーニングセンターを2020年4月に設置し、2021年4月より本格的に活動を開始しました。
QTAやGSIは耳慣れない言葉かもしれませんが、QTAはQualified Teaching Assistantの、GSIはGraduate Student Instructorの略語です。授業の補助業務を行うTAと比べて、QTAは、授業1コマを受け持つような授業分担者を、GSIは、大学院生の講師が科目の大部分を担うなどの授業担当者を想定しています。
QTAやGSIは大学院生にも教員にも有用な制度です。まず大学院生の教育力が高まります。教育する者が一番学ぶ者である、などと今さら言うまでもありませんが、大学院生は教えることを通じて専門知識はもちろん汎用的な能力を身につけることができます。将来的にアカデミアに進むかどうかによらず、教える経験やそこでの気づきは多くの場面で活かされるでしょう。もちろん、業務に見合った対価として、通常のTAよりも高い給料を受け取ることができます。
授業を受け持つ教員にとってはどうでしょうか。学生の主体的な学びを促すような授業は授業担当者に大きな負担をかけますが、この制度を活用することで、チームとして授業を担当することができます。知識レベルの異なる学生同士が学び合う場を作る意義もあります。特にQTAは、教員と学生の中間的な存在として両者の間を繋ぐ役割も果たすのではないでしょうか。
ただし、大学でよりよく教えるためには、自身の専門性を深めることはもとより、教授法等を身につける必要があります。これは、授業を受ける学生にとっても、講師自身にとっても大切です。海やプールで泳ぐことを思い浮かべてください。泳ぎ方を何も知らずに水に入るよりも、少しでも身につけてからのほうが、安心して手足を動かせるのではないでしょうか。
QTA・GSIトレーニングセンターはQTAやGSIの候補者に一定の研修を実施します。そして、これらの研修を修了することにより、QTA・GSIの資格を授与されます。これが私たちのメインの活動ですが、QTA・GSIを目指さない方にも教授法等の研修機会を提供していきたいと考えています。
その他にも、関連するセミナーの開催や調査研究の実施も予定しています。これらはホームページなどで随時紹介していきます。
大学院生の教育力を高めるために、内外にネットワークを形成しながら、着実に活動を続けていきたいと考えています。当センターの活動に興味関心を持ち、ご参加頂ければ幸いです。

QTA/GSI Training Center was established in April 2020, and started the certificate program in April 2021 by Tokai National Higher Education and Research System with the aim of “building a framework and providing suitable training for graduate students who participate in a class as QTA or GSI.
QTA and GSI may be unfamiliar terms to you; QTA is abbreviation for Qualified Teaching Assistant and GSI is for Graduate Student Instructor. While TA (Teaching Assistant) performs supporting roles in a class in Japan, QTA has the initiative in a class and GSI takes charge of the majority of course.
Teaching with QTA and GSI is effective for both graduate students and faculty. For graduate students, being QTA or GSI is an opportunity to enhance their teaching skills. As you know “good teachers are always good learners,” graduate students can acquire not only specialized knowledge but also general competencies through participating in teaching. Whether or not they go into academia in the future, the experience of teaching broadens their insights and must be useful in many situations anywhere. Students working as QTA and GSI will receive a higher salary than a regular TA.
For faculty, teaching with QTA and GSI expands the possibility of coursework. Managing active learning in a class may place a burden on faculty, but QTA and GSI allow them to make a teaching team. Moreover, QTA and GSI create a class where students with different levels of knowledge can learn from each other. QTA may play an intermediary role between faculty and students.
In order to teach better at universities, it is necessary for faculty not only to deepen one’s own expertise, but also to acquire teaching methods and skills. Assume you’ve never swum. By learning a tips for the swim before entering the water, you would feel more comfortable moving your arms and legs rather than knowing nothing about how to swim.
QTA/GSI Training Center provides programs for teaching to QTA and GSI candidates. Then, those who complete these programs will earn QTA and GSI certificate. This is our main activity, and at the same time we are planning to offer some programs in teaching methods to anyone who wish to improve their teaching skills.
In addition, we plan to hold wide-open seminars and conduct surveys and research related to teaching and learning. These will be shared via our website in the near future.
We intend to steadily continue our activities to enhance teaching skills of graduate students, while forming networks both internally and externally. We hope you will be interested in our activities and join us.
